FEAR AND UNCONDITIONAL TRUST – and their relationship with stress and peace of mind
Stress is based on FEAR.
Freedom of stress is based on UNCONDITIONAL TRUST, a type of trust that knows no boundaries, no conditions, and no reservations. A trust that means that NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, WE WILL BE BETTER OFF!
What complicates matters is that fear is always with us. Let us say for example that we are experiencing happiness today; the moment we get happiness, at that very second, we acquire the fear of either losing happiness, and/or not getting the happiness we want.
Why would a gastroenterologist talk about stress and unconditional trust? Are not these more the territory of the psychologist or psychiatrist? Well, in my research on patients who have eating disorders and gastrointestinal problems worsen by their lifestyle, I have noticed how prevailing these two feelings, mainly fear and stress, are. It is now well recognized that there is a “Mind-Gut” connection and we need to address what is going on in our brain as suffer stomach and belly problems in order to decrease the amount of unnecessary grief and medications because worrying and chemicals (prescribed and non-prescribed) are frequently not the best solution for a chronically stressful situation. It is true that a good number of people will need antidepressants, antiulcer medications, narcotics, etc.; however, these medications are not a substitute for patients of what they can do for themselves –THIS IS THE BOTTOMLINE. We cannot have a pill or somebody else living our life, we have to become accountable for our own health!!
Empowering patients to do what they can do for themselves involves teaching them about MEDITATION, NUTRITION AND EXERCISE. Stress management is part of the meditation aspect.
